No Base Trio is the union of alto saxophonist Jonathan Suazo, guitarist Gabriel Vicéns, and drummer Leonardo Osuna, formed in 2010 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The group focuses on creating music without boundaries, consistently pushing the limits of sound and improvisation. They began by performing straight-ahead jazz standards at concerts across the island, occasionally incorporating improvised pieces to break up the set. After recognizing the unique energy that emerged during these improvisations, the trio decided to continue as a fully improvised ensemble, performing at local venues such as Abracadabra Counter Café, La Taberna Lúpulo, El Local en Santurce, Nuestro Son, and El Boricua.

In 2020, No Base Trio released their critically acclaimed eponymous debut on the avant-garde label Setola di Maiale. Critics praised the album for its ambient textures and exploratory spirit. All About Jazz remarked, “Its cascading, formless ambience provides strange new spaces to inhabit, explore, and contemplate during lockdown.”

After more than a year of inactivity due to COVID-19, the trio returned to the studio to record their second album, NBT II, which was released in October 2022 on Setola di Maiale. Musicologist and critic Marc Medwin, writing for The Squid’s Ear, noted: “There are groups that fail to accomplish exactly what makes this group successful, and that involves listening.”

This collective contributes to the ongoing evolution of music, as its members explore new forms of expression with wisdom, creativity, and passion.
