No Base Trio brings together alto saxophonist Jonathan Suazo, guitarist Gabriel Vicéns, and drummer Leonardo Osuna. Formed in 2010 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the group is dedicated to exploring the possibilities of collective improvisation and pushing the boundaries of musical expression.

The trio began by performing straight-ahead jazz standards at venues throughout Puerto Rico, occasionally incorporating freely improvised pieces into their sets. Recognizing the unique energy and musical possibilities that emerged from these spontaneous exchanges, the musicians gradually abandoned predetermined structures in favor of an entirely improvised approach. They went on to perform at local venues such as Abracadabra Counter Café, La Taberna Lúpulo, El Local en Santurce, Nuestro Son, and El Boricua.

In 2020, No Base Trio released its self-titled debut album on the Italian avant-garde label Setola di Maiale. The album received critical praise for its ambient textures and exploratory spirit. All About Jazz remarked, “Its cascading, formless ambience provides strange new spaces to inhabit, explore, and contemplate during lockdown.”

Following a hiatus of more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the trio returned to the studio to record its second album, NBT II, released in October 2022 on Setola di Maiale. Musicologist and critic Marc Medwin, writing for The Squid’s Ear, observed: “There are groups that fail to accomplish exactly what makes this group successful, and that involves listening.”

At the heart of No Base Trio's music is a commitment to attentive listening, spontaneous interaction, and the collective exploration of sound.
